Why Ellington:

“Ellington stood out to me because of its welcoming atmosphere and strong sense of community. It’s a town where people truly care about one another. Being able to contribute to a community that values connection, wellness, and lifelong learning for older adults makes this work especially meaningful.

Reinventing Aging! Changing the Perception of Senior Centers:

“One thing I would like people to understand is that we need to “flip the script” on aging. Reinventing aging starts with changing how we see it. Today’s senior centers are places where active adults thrive, not slow down.” Senior centers play an important role in helping people remain independent, active, and able to age in the homes and communities they love.”

It Takes a Village

"My goal when hired as Senior Center Director was simple: to make the Ellington Senior Center a place where individuals over 55 feel connected, supported, and excited to come through the doors each day. Over the past several years, I am proud that we have turned that vision into reality. Through the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and community partners, the Ellington Senior Center has grown into a vibrant hub for active adults. Participation, transportation, and programming have expanded significantly, alongside improvements to the facility including a new fitness center, updated flooring, pickleball courts, outdoor fitness equipment, and a community greenhouse. Transportation continues to be a critical service, and a new wheelchair-accessible vehicle is currently in the works, which will help ensure more residents can access the center and remain connected to programs and services. These improvements, combined with the dedication of our team and volunteers, have helped transform the Ellington Senior Center into what many now describe as a hidden gem in the community—a welcoming place where older adults can stay active, build friendships, and remain connected to the town they call home."

Employee Spotlight - Kristen Harp

March may be over, but we're not quite done with our Women's History spotlights! Up next is our Ellington Youth Services Director Kristen Harp, who began working for the Town in the summer of 2003. She has had the opportunity to grow across multiple departments and roles over the years. She began her career in education and later moved into youth services to better support the Ellington community by building on positive programming, emphasizing social-emotional learning, and promoting mental health and prevention in a space where young people, and their families, feel supported and can thrive.
