Ellington's Charter was last reviewed by a bipartisan Charter Revision Commission in 2024. Recommended revisions were approved by voters on November 5, 2024. The revised Charter became effective on December 5, 2024.
Every 5 years the town is required to review its Charter (Sec. 1308). The amendment of the Charter may be initiated by a 2/3 vote of the Board of Selectmen, or by a petitions signed by not less than 10% of the electors of the town. The Board of Selectmen then appoint a Charter Revision Commission to review and make recommendations for revision of the Charter. The Board of Selectmen must approve any proposed revisions and such revisions are then put before the electors of the town at an election or special election. No proposed revision becomes effective unless approved by the voters.
