Referendum #2 will be held on Tuesday, June 11th from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm at the Ellington Senior Center, 40 Maple Street to allow electors the opportunity to vote on the amended budget. The details on what has been adjusted can be found here. The new budget represents a .9 decrease in mill rate from the previously proposed budget that was sent to referendum (net increase of 1.7 mills compared to the rate of 2.6 that was voted down). Many of the cuts do impact services previously provided to residents, so it is imperative that these reductions in services are understood.
A referendum was held on Tuesday, May 28 to allow electors the opportunity to vote on the following question:
"SHALL THE TOWN OF ELLINGTON APPROPRIATE, AS RECOMMENDED AND AS ALLOCATED BY THE BOARD OF FINANCE, THE TOTAL SUM FOR ALL EXPENDITURES, A/K/A BUDGET GRAND TOTAL FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 2024-2025, $71,603,268?"
The proposed budget failed at the May 28 referendum, 1060 No - 430 Yes.
The Board of Finance held Deliberations Meetings on Thursday, May 30 and Monday, June 3. Per the Town Charter, further votes on the Annual Town Budget shall be by referendum every other week thereafter, following the original referendum date, until it is approved. The amended budget that is developed after the deliberations meeting(s) will be published for review prior to the June 11 referendum vote.
All information on the proposed FY 2024-2025 budget can be found on our Finance Department page.
The Annual Town Budget Meeting (7:00 pm, Ellington High School Auditorium) took place on Tuesday, May 14th. The Board of Selectmen, at their April 8th regular meeting, made a motion indicating that the Annual Town Budget Meeting would be adjourned to referendum vote, to be held on Tuesday, May 28th.
A Public Hearing was held on April 9th, where interested citizens were able to comment on and ask questions on details of the proposed budget. The Board of Finance then went through each line item and made changes at their Budget Deliberations meeting, held on April 11th.
