Trade Name
Trade Name Registration
State law requires that any person doing business in Connecticut under any name other than their own must either register a trade name in the town where their business is conducted, or register with the Secretary of State's office as a corporation or limited liability company. CT State Statute 35-1)
Home businesses must obtain a permit from the Planning and Zoning Department. Bring proper identification, such as a driver's license or photo ID, to the Town Clerk's Office to file your Trade Name Certificate.

Trade Name Cancellation
If you cease operations under your trade name or if you decide to change your trade name, you must file a Trade Name Cancellation. All parties who signed the initial Trade Name Certificate must appear to sign the cancellation.

Renewals
Under the new law, all trade names will expire 5 years from the date they are filed. Trade names existing prior to January 1, 2025 will expire on December 31, 2029.
Fees
- The fee for filing a Trade Name is $20.
- The fee to file a Trade Name Cancellation is $20.
