Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
Staff is certified and trained by the IRS to provide FREE tax preparation and filing services (Federal and State) for households who make under $55,000. Applications are done only by appointment. Please call us for more information and to schedule your appointment. Unfortunately, we cannot accept persons with military, foreign or certain self employment income.
AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides in-person and remote tax assistance free of charge to anyone, with a special focus on taxpayers who are 50 or older or who have low to moderate income. Assistance is by appointment only. Contact the Ellington Senior Center for information (860) 870-3133.
Elderly Property Tax Relief
Homeowners who are 65 years of age or older, or receive Social Security Disability, can apply for a reduction in their property tax assessment. The credit amount is calculated by the local assessor and applied by the tax collector to the applicant's real property tax bill. The amount of the credit that may be granted is up to $1,250 for married couples and $1,000 for single persons. Credit amounts are based on a graduated income scale. Application may be made with the Assessor's Office between February 1st and May 15th. Contact the Assessor’s Office for more information (860) 870-3109.
Veterans' Additional Exemption Tax Relief Program
State law provides a basic $1,000 property tax exemption for certain honorably discharged veterans who actively served at least 90 days during war time, or their survivors. Income eligible veterans may be eligible for an additional exemption.
