Located at the Town Hall. Responsible for the review of and adjustments to the Town Emergency Plan as filed with the State Office of Emergency Management. The Emergency Management Director receives and disseminates information from the State Office of Emergency Management concerning impending emergencies, such as severe weather, terrorism alerts and other situations that may affect the Town of Ellington and its citizens.

Investigates all fires, explosions and hazardous materials incidents in the town; annually inspects every building and occupancy (except single and two-family residences) enforcing the Connecticut Fire Safety Code and related regulations; reviews construction plans and documents; inspects and approves all new permits and renewals of permits for liquor establishments, day care centers, health care group homes, hazardous materials transportation vehicles (liquefied petroleum gasses, gasoline, fuel oil, and other CT regulated materials including explosives); administers the state and town open burning program.

Inspects restaurants and other food service establishments, homes, schools, convalescent homes and other institutions working to prevent spread of communicable diseases. Review, test and approve new septic systems as well as a review and approval of system repairs and/or expansion. Test drinking water, paint samples for lead. Investigates complaints in regard to public health hazards.

Plans, organizes and implements a comprehensive prevention program, including community activities, educational program for parents and youth, outreach and media relations. Provides liaison between schools, recreation, police, community, social, civic and faith based groups to assist in the improvement of conditions leading to underage drinking.
